Analysis of article:
This article is intended to be published online, and it's purpose is to inform audiences (specifically audiences local to Sheffield) about the new Light Cinema in Sheffield. The articles target audience is specifically males and females aged 16-25 that live in Sheffield. The reason the target audience's gender is both is because cinema and films can be appealed to both.
The title "THE FLASH OF LIGHT OVER SHEFFIELD" is meant to gain the audiences attention through the phrase "FLASH OF LIGHT" which creates the imagery of a flash of light in the audiences head meaning they will be interested immediately. The word "SHEFFIELD" should also appeal to audiences, since the target audience are specifically from Sheffield and should feel a personal interest in the article since its about the place they live in.
The article uses a teacher to pupil mode of address, since the article is written in a formal way, with no colloquial language however the article doesn't use elaborate coding since the article isn't about serious issues and is actually focused on a topic which should be enjoyed by readers, since it is about the opening of a cinema.
However the article does use compound-complex sentences for example:
"The opening of The Light Cinema, is in fact brilliant news for the Moor, since The Light seems to be planning to materialise the area and transform the Moor from a grotty array of markets, to an exciting place with many activities offer which are can be accessed by all – including a visit to The Light."
This is because, despite the articles positive nature, the article still needs to maintain its formal nature, in order to assure the reader that what they are reading is reliable and true.
I also included quotations of speech from Phil Dove, who is the manager of The Light Cinema Sheffield, and has worked on many other cinemas around the UK, therefore he was a primary definer, meaning the when the people read the article they are going to trust what he is saying more, and take what he says more seriously.
“We felt that Sheffield City Centre didn’t really have any great cinemas, and we were really excited about the whole regeneration of the city centre and really wanted to be part of this development.”
In this quote Phil Dove is speaking about how The Light Cinema wanted to affect Sheffield's city community, speaking about how building The Light in the moor was a part of the "regeneration" of the city centre, which gives the reader the impression that The Light is going to improve the city and make it a better place in order to attract more people to Sheffield, meaning that the community will improve.
Ipso Editors' Code of Practise:
When gaining quotes and information from primary definers such as Phil Dove I ensured that I didn't break the code of Accuracy, by mis-quoting what he said and making him out to say mis-leading/false information which may compromise him in the public eye. I also ensured that details such as dates of openings are accurate in order not to mis-inform readers.
When gaining quotes and information for the article from primary definers I also had to ensure that I did not break the Harassment code specified in the code of contact, since Keith Pullinger did not reply to my email, I didn't persistently email him demanding that he could give me the information that I need. Also when gathering information through secondary definers, if people refused to fill in my questionnaire, I didn't insist that they fill it in in order not to break the Harassment code, because if I did and included the gathered information used from non compliant definers, I would be breaking the Harassment code.
When gaining information from secondary definers about the cinema experience, I made sure that my questionnaire didn't include questions which could be invading a persons Privacy, for example asked no questions which required sensitive data, for example sexuality, religion, ethnicity, social background. I also ensured that as a part of my studies I didn't interview any Children, in order not to break the Children code in the code of practise.
When discussing how The Light Cinema would effect the community at the Moor I also made sure not to include information that would be bought from primary definers, since using bought information would be breaking the Financial Journalism code of practise.
